Grant Overview
Target outcomes centre on measurable increases in public reporting of freshwater turtle sightings across Newfoundland and Labrador's coastal communities. The province records fewer than 150 verified wood turtle observations annually, concentrated on the island's west coast and in Labrador's Churchill River valley. These low numbers reflect both genuine scarcity and limited observer networks.
Coastal isolation amplifies the gap. Ferry-dependent communities on the Northern Peninsula and southern Labrador lack consistent access to university extension services. School curricula currently allocate zero hours to regional turtle ecology, despite the presence of the endangered Blandings turtle in limited inland pockets.
Education programs funded under this grant must produce bilingual modules aligned with Newfoundland and Labrador's K-12 science outcomes. Modules will incorporate local harvest calendars and ice-out dates rather than generic North American examples. Pre- and post-program surveys will track changes in student identification accuracy and reporting rates to the provincial wildlife division.
Implementation requires partnerships with the Newfoundland and Labrador School Boards Association and at least two Indigenous governments. Budgets must cover travel on the Labrador ferry system and printing of waterproof field guides suited to marine climates.
The province differs from Nova Scotia by requiring all materials to address both island and mainland populations within a single project cycle. Proposals omitting Labrador delivery plans receive automatic disqualification.
