These barriers concentrate among the 8,200 active fish harvesters distributed across 400 coastal communities. Many operate on 10- to 14-day fishing trips, creating gaps in continuous health monitoring. Environmental exposure records for cold-water immersion and diesel particulate matter exist only in paper logs at 60 percent of union halls, impeding linkage to electronic health records.
The funding supports researchers who hold doctoral degrees and occupy independent full-time research positions. Eligible applicants in this province typically hold appointments at Memorial University’s Marine Institute or the Faculty of Medicine. Applications must include plans for vessel-based or dockside data collection that accommodates irregular work cycles rather than clinic-centered protocols.
Reviewers evaluate whether proposed cohorts can reach fish harvesters in ports with fewer than 500 residents, where travel to St. John’s exceeds eight hours. Successful applications have previously integrated occupational health logs with the provincial Newfoundland and Labrador HealthLine database. Unlike applications from other Atlantic provinces, Newfoundland and Labrador reviewers require proof that any new instrumentation fits within existing vessel safety certification rules enforced by Transport Canada.
