Newfoundland and Labrador’s fisheries workforce experiences documented exposure to cold-water immersion, diesel particulates, and irregular shift patterns that differ from those recorded in other Atlantic provinces. Provincial workers’ compensation records link these exposures to elevated rates of neurodegenerative markers, yet no longitudinal cohort has examined frontotemporal dementia incidence specifically within this occupation.
The barrier arises from the geographic separation between fishing communities on the northeast coast and the province’s single tertiary neurology centre in St. John’s. Seasonal ice and limited ferry schedules restrict access to advanced imaging during winter months, producing systematic missing data in any study that relies on hospital-based recruitment alone.
The funding stream addresses this barrier by supporting portable biomarker collection kits and partnerships with community health clinics in ports such as Bonavista and Marystown. It also funds data linkage between existing fisheries health registries and hospital discharge abstracts without requiring physical transfer of participants.
Eligibility hinges on documented access to at least three distinct coastal regions and prior approval from the provincial fisheries safety authority for record extraction. Projects that instead propose centralised recruitment at the St. John’s centre alone will not meet the geographic criterion.
The program therefore privileges applications that treat the province’s 29,000-kilometre coastline and its 400-plus fishing enterprises as the primary sampling frame rather than as an ancillary population.
